Veterinary Students

We are proud to host veterinary students from AVMA-accredited programs for both formal externships and informal visits. Our goal is to provide a supportive, realistic, and highly individualized experience that helps you grow clinically and understand equine practice.

Externships are tailored to your interests. Students may choose which doctor(s) to work with each day based on caseload and learning goals. You are not expected to function as a veterinary assistant; instead, we focus on observation, discussion, and hands-on opportunities when appropriate for safety, efficiency, and client comfort.

Our caseload includes wellness care, emergency medicine, dentistry including advanced dental procedures, internal medicine, sports medicine and in-house rehabilitation. We have minimal Externs are encouraged to participate in weekend cases, after-hours emergencies, and inpatient care depending on their interest level. We ask that expectations around emergency participation be discussed at the start of your visit.

Scheduling & Timing
Typical externships range from one to three weeks, though we will accommodate alternative date ranges when possible. Due to seasonality, mid-March through late October offers the most robust caseload and learning opportunities.

Housing & Location
We offer free on-site housing for visiting veterinary students when available. Nearby accommodations are available in Castle Rock and Parker. Our clinic is located in Elizabeth, Colorado—less than an hour from Denver International Airport and close to the Colorado Horse Park. The area offers extensive outdoor recreation, including hiking, skiing, and more.

Students must be in good standing at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school. Proof of liability insurance (e.g., AVMA PLIT) is required at least 30 days prior to your start date.
