A Bit About Dr. Smith
Dr. Mindy Smith leads Iron Horse Equine with a focus on approachable, thoughtful veterinary care, practical diagnostics, and protecting quality of life for every horse she treats. Originally from a small fishing town in Alaska with only one pony on the island, Dr. Smith developed an early interest in horses despite limited access, which ultimately led her to pursue a career in equine veterinary medicine. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in biology from Pacific Union College before completing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis in 2016. She completed an Equine Field Service internship at Colorado State University, where she contributed to research on field anesthesia and advanced her clinical training in ambulatory equine practice. Dr. Smith joined Iron Horse Equine in 2017 and became the practice owner in 2021. As a leader, she is committed to building a veterinary culture that prioritizes well-being, sustainability, and longevity in equine medicine. Her goal is to support a high-functioning team that delivers consistent, high-quality care while creating an environment where both clients and veterinary professionals can thrive. Dr. Smith practices all aspects of general equine medicine, including wellness care, lameness evaluation, and emergency services, with special interests in sports medicine and rehabilitation. Her clinical style is calm, practical, and goal-oriented, helping horse owners develop clear, thoughtful plans that align with their horse’s needs and intended use. Her approach is diagnostically driven, with a focus on finding clear answers whenever possible. She places a strong emphasis on quality of life, working to keep horses comfortable, functional, and able to succeed in their role—whether in performance, companionship, or retirement. She is certified in veterinary acupuncture (cVMA) and veterinary chiropractic, and integrates these therapies alongside traditional medicine to support long-term soundness and recovery. She is also actively involved in practice management and enjoys speaking and teaching on both medical and business topics. Outside of work, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time on their farm in Colorado with her husband and two children, their greyhounds, and an ever-growing herd of horses.
